Think for a moment how today would play out without the noise of your mind chatter. I am talking about the white noise in your head that keeps us stuck in the past, worrying about the future, and ultimately making it virtually impossible to be in the moment.
What would your life be like if you could, for the most part, really be present with the person, activity or situation standing right in front of you? Probably a lot happier, calmer and effective! Here are three tips to get you started:
- Remind Your Mind: Simply use a word or phrase to alert yourself it’s time to focus on the “now.” Before I meet with clients or when my mind starts to wander when in conversation with a friend, I repeat in my head Jon Kabat-Zinn’s quote of “I pay attention, on purpose, in the moment, as if my life depended upon it.” That quickly brings me back from the mind wandering and keeps me where I want to be… which is with that other person.
- Calm Your Mind: Give yourself a few minutes of meditating in the morning, try out yoga, or get a great workout in. Think about what has worked for you in the past when life felt smoother and less chaotic… what were you doing to make that happen?
- Refresh Your Mind: Get outside! Studies show the simple act of enjoying the view, breathing in fresh air and hearing all the sounds of nature (even if it’s the one tree outside your office on a busy street!) has a calming effect on our bodies and minds.
Enjoy the day!
