Lolling on the lanai. Psych advice. Gluten-free bread. Half-pound Angus burgers. What more does one need during summer in Bay View?
Well, how about MaryOke (karaoke) sessions Friday and Saturday nights; Dining with the Divas drag revues on Saturday; Pop Quiz trivia evenings; and HamBINGO (this ain’t yer granny’s church basement game). A wildly popular Drink-n-Shrink on the second Tuesday of each month was launched this spring, featuring clinical psychologist Dr. Julie Helmrich fielding handwritten questions from the audience. Subjects range from sex to family and omnipresent relationship issues.
Hamburger Mary’s has it all, a gleefully shazam joint, one where families are also welcome. Kids especially go for the Sunday brunch griddle cakes with their pecan crunchiness and sweet lather of caramel chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
Twin brothers Brandon and Ashley Wright own the Mary’s franchises in Milwaukee and Chicago, included in a chain of eateries launched in San Francisco in 1972. The Wrights have made their South-Side getaway into a happy harbor where guests can feel free to kick higher and sing louder, making it more than just a pub with grub. Plus, emphasizing freshness and earning high marks from sustainable dining fans, their veggie garden out back has tomatoes already perking and herbs galore.
But bring your own boa.
The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner, from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. There is a late-night menu from 10 p.m.-midnight, Thursday through Saturday. Brunch is served 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, with $2 mimosas. Carryout available.
